Chiton Gets Defibrillated!
As most of you will be aware, Chiton will be
receiving a defibrillator this season, so we need as many patrolling
members as possible to become qualified to use it (at least 2
on each patrol).
Courses are as follows:
Thursday 1st November, Glenelg 7pm
Tuesday 6th November, Aldinga Bay 7pm
Thursday 8th November, Somerton 7pm
Please let me know if you would like to attend one of these courses
and I will register you, or you can register yourself at www.surfrescue.com.au
A Note from Jamesy
As some of you know, I now manage the EFM Health
club at 1/236 Port Elliot Road, Victor Harbor, the group of shops
on the left along the straight
If you are staying down for any period of time at Chiton for
patrols or just a weekend, and are interested in using the facilities,
I can arrange the gym to be open both Saturday morning and Sunday
morning between 8am and 11am or during the week between 6am to
10am or 4.00pm to 7.30pm and some lunch time sessions during
the week
Normal casual visits are $15.00, however I will arrange a substantial
discount for casual visits for Chiton members or we can arrange
cheaper weekly or fortnightly rates.
I have enclosed the current timetable, however this will change
over the summer school holidays
Cheers

Chiton 50th Celebrations a Success
Our 50th Celebrations on 13th & 14th October
were a great success with many old members attending and some
of them thinking of re-joining. Everyone who attended had a great
time, and the Surf Boat even got wet on the Sunday morning. Thanks
to everyone who helped out over the weekend and leading up to
the event.
On track for 100 members
Item posted: 22nd August,

Membership increased from 60 to 95 during
the season 06/07 with 41 new members joining the club and only
6 members leaving. Importantly there were 13 new active members
most achieving double figures patrol hours in their first year.
Junior membership (nippers) also increased by 13 and supporter
membership increased by 8.
Club President Glen Duncan said, "At the beginning of the
season members adopted an aggressive 5 year plan with annual
membership goals. It's fantastic and a testament to the hard
work of the Chiton membership that the first year membership
targets were achieved. There's more to do this year but we're
well on the way."
To become a Chiton member contact Club President Glen Duncan
on 0408 997 982, Chief Instructor Paul Frost on 0407 393 871
or for junior membership (nippers) contact Lindy Foureur on 0407

Annual Report.

This season members will notice a new
rescue board on the beach with the name Blair 'Kappy' Keir emblazoned
on it. The new board has been funded by Kappy's daughters in
memory of their father. Kappy was Chiton's second President,
a life member of the club and a driving force in the club's early
years.

Chiton group bookings can now be made through
Toop and Toop Victor Harbor following their recent acquisition
of the rental arm of Ray White Port Elliot. The faces haven't
changed with Roanne and Kay simply relocating to the Toop and
Toop office. Toop and Toop offer a range of holiday rental options,
Chiton members seeking permanent or holiday accommodation on
the south coast are encouraged to contact Roanne or Kay on 8555
8888 or email Roanne.Turner@toop.com.au. Toop and Toop are located
at 158 Hindmarsh Road Victor Harbor.
The committee recently increased the overnight accommodation
fee to $20 per head per night, the first price change in about
10 years. The fee is for dormitory style accommodation (up to
26) and use of clubs facilities but does not include lifesaving
equipment.
Chiton is available to school, club and family bookings but generally
doesn't accept bookings for individuals. Chiton is also an excellent
venue for special events like weddings. Chiton offers the opportunity
to self style and self caterer your wedding in a picturesque
location and with very reasonable bar prices.
Members are able to stay at the club but it is advisable to check
with Toop and Toop regarding any bookings. In most circumstances
the downstairs flat is available for members even if a group
has booked the bunkhouse and are using club facilities. In some
circumstances groups pay a premium to have the entire club exclusively
and on these occasions the committee will try to advise members.
Bookings are also not accepted from the weekend before Xmas until
the third weekend in January. All bookings are scrutinised by
the committee.
For more information check out our bookings page or contact Roanne
or Kay at Toop & Toop Victor Harbor on 8555 8888.
Bumper Season for Surf Lifesaving awards
Item posted: Thursday 9th
August, 2007, by Barry
What a season for awards! Lead by our
positively charged Chief Instructor Paul Frost, members achieved
67 awards and renewals during the 2006/07 season.
Most notable of these is bronze medallions gained by Aaron Lindsay.
Aaron is the first bronzies at Chiton for some years and to make
their efforts even more special they undertook their examination
at Chiton - something that hasn't happened for sometime and no
mean feat in messy 3 foot surf. Aaron and Jude also added Advanced
Resuscitation to their award list.
Seventeen members gained their Senior First Aid award and 12
members gained their Spinal Management award. Eleven members
renewed the Advance Resuscitation award and 6 requalified to
drive the IRB.
Finally seventeen members were recognised with the awarding of
Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue). This is a new
award that recognises bronze holders as meeting nationally agreed
competencies.
Well done to everybody and great effort Frosty. Anyone interested
in becoming a Chiton member and gaining surf lifesaving awards
can contact Paul Frost on 0407 393 871. For more info on this
year awards read the Chief instructors report in the 50th Chiton

Chiton wins $60 000 Youth Grant
Item posted: Monday 8th August,

Youth Minister Paul Caica recently announced
Chiton SLSC as successful recipients of this year's Youth Engagement
Grants worth $60,000 over three years. Chiton was one of 6 successful
grants in a field of 148 applicants. The $60,000 grant will provide
mentoring for young people exiting the juvenile justice system
who are at risk of re-offending. The project will involve weekend
surfing sessions aimed at engaging the young participants in
surf life saving and ultimately encourage these young people
to become involved in volunteering community life and influence
community development.
Chiton is actively recruiting mentors from the South Australian
Surf Lifesaving movement who are willing to give up approximately
a day a month to go surfing or surf lifesaving with a young person
who has been accepted by the program.
For more information about the 'Breakaway'
program contact Glen Duncan on 0408 972 448.

Congratulations to Bronze Squad on passing
Bronze Exams
Please join me in congratulating Aaron Lindsay and Judy O'Sullivan
for passing their Bronze Medallions last Saturday. Also a special
thanks to Paul Frost for training Aaron and Judy over the season.
Here is a happy snap of our latest patrolling members taken on
the weekend.
Tony "Fritter" Park passed away
on the weekend
Sad news today for Chiton and Surf Lifesaving in general:
Tony "Fritter" Park passed away on the weekend. As
many would know, Tony had suffered a stroke over the last few
weeks. Newer members (including me) would probably only know
Tony from his efforts in getting the Crack a Wave competition
running down at Chiton over the last couple of years. Older members
may know that Tony was the Club Captain at Chiton between 1967
and 1969, and got Chiton on the map in the late 60's in terms
of competition in RnR and other events. Tony was well loved by
the Surf Lifesaving community and will be sadly missed.
The members and friends of Chiton Rocks SLSC would like to
offer their sincere condolences to Tony's family.
Tony's funeral will be held this Friday, Feb 23, 2007 at St.
Peter's Cathedral, opposite Adelaide Oval. There will be a wake
held after at Grange SLSC.
Fundraising Night
By now, all club members should know about Chiton's main fundraising
event for the season, the Chiton 100 Supporters Club. All members
are encouraged to get behind this fundraising event and sell
as many tickets as possible. Pete Byrne is doing a great job
with the help of Jim Miller. All members are encouraged to buy
a ticket in this draw. Please see the side-bard to the left of
the main page for more details, and an entry form.
The Chiton 100 Supporters Night will be held on Saturday,
10 March 2007 (long weekend) at the Chiton bar, with the winning
ticket drawn at 7.30pm.
Alexandrina Council to support Club for recent
building renovations
After the recent expensive work was done to upgrade the club's
facilities to meet the latest building regulations in regards
to fire and safety, club Treasurer Baz Paynter applied to Alexandrina
Council for a $15,000 grant to assist in the club's refurbishment.
To our great delight, Council have accepted the request. We are
planning to organise a public hand-over of the cheque for funding
from a council representative (hopefully Mayor Kym McHue) to
the club in the very near future, possible the next Nippers day.
We envisage this will be the starting point of a cooperative
partnership between Chiton Rocks SLSC and Alexandrina council,
as we pursue our strategic goals, especially the planned major
building re-work over the next 5 years.
Special thanks to Baz for the initiative to pursue the council
on this issue and achieve such a good result. Baz will be spearheading
discussions between the club and council in the near future,
for presentation of our Strategic
Plan and Concept plans for the proposed new building.
Club Champs New Date: Sunday 11 March, 2007
Chub Champs was supposed to be held on Saturday, Jan 27, but
due to poor weather it was cancelled. It has now been rescheduled
for the Sunday following the Chiton 100 Supporters night, 11
March 2007.
Members Day
Members Day will be held on the last Saturday of the patrolling
season, Saturday 31st March 2007. This is also the last nippers
session. There will be a bouncy castle, face painting/tattoos,door
prizes, bar specials and a free raffle for all patrolling members
of a custom-made surfboard, donated by Nasty Surfboards in conjunction
with the club. All members, nippers and nipper parents are encouraged
to attend this fun event. This will be the 4th year we have run
this and it has kept getting better.
Members day on Sat. 31st March, 2007, at 3pm
and into the evening.
50th Anniversary Dinner
Unfortunately, due to a plethora of activities, the committee
has decided to postpone the 50th Annual Dinner till later in
the year. The committee believed we could not do this important
event justice if we still planned to have it April, given that
our efforts are being concentrated on the Fundraising night and
the Members day. The date is now set for Saturday, October 13,
2007. At this stage, we don't know whether we will still be having
the dinner at McCraken Golf Course or another venue. We are sorry
if this inconveniences anyone. All vocal critiques will be added
to the sub-committee for the 50th Dinner! ;-) Stay tuned for
more news...
AGM Date set, Sat. June 9, 2007, 2pm
This year, the AGM is being held early, on Saturday 9 June,
2007. We may have a smaller version dinner to accompany this,
which may be a bbq at the club, or going out to tea. Stay tuned
for further details...
Telstra Sponsorship
The Club was recently successful in securing new lifesaving
equipment through the Telstra Surf Lifesaving Assistance Fund
. Telstra kindly provided the club with a new rescue mal, a new
radio and a new Annie manikan. Telstra's support is fantastic
and greatly appreciated. This equipment would ordinarily cost
the club several thousand dollars to purchase. Many thanks to
Telstra and club members are encouraged to support those that
support your club.
